Semester : First Semester
Introducing students to English literature involves addressing certain questions. What does the university study of English Literature entail? How can students approach and read varied literary texts? What constitutes as basic elements of a literary work? To engage with and address such questions, the NEP curriculum devised the paper 'DSC-01: Introduction to Literary Studies'. In accordance with the framework, the book is divided into three parts – Reading the Novel, Reading Poetry and Reading Drama – which comprise essays, introductory notes, and poems with annotations. The essays detail theories that are pivotal for a historical and critical understanding of literature and provide explanations of literary forms, styles and techniques. With essays by Gerald J. Prince, A.N. Kaul, Margaret Ferguson, Mary Jo Salter, Jon Stallworthy, G.J. Watson, Habib Tanvir and Gary Day, the book, Introduction to Literary Studies, offers students a comprehensive and foundational guide to approach literature and understand how language is used for novels, poetry and drama.
