This volume, Readings in Classical Literary Theory, contains the theoretical works by Aristotle, Plato and Horace which are prescribed either as set books or as background readings for Unit II and Unit III of the European Classical Literature paper DSC-02 to be studied by students of English Honours in Delhi University from 2022-23. Each text has an introduction and annotations designed to help students grasp its importance and influence on later writers. Some useful additional extracts have been included because of their relevance for students of literature.Texts:Plato, ‘The Simile of the Cave’ from Republic, Book VII, some extracts from the Symposium, and the whole of Republic, Book X, translated by Davies and Vaughan.Aristotle, Poetics, translated by T. Rushton Fairclough, with a helpful summary by the editor.In addition, there is a critical essay on Aristotle’s Poetics, by Leon Golden titled ‘Toward a Definition of Tragedy.’ Harriet Raghunathan retired as Associate Professor after teaching for 35 years in the Department of English, Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University.
