This Worldview Critical Edition of Kate Chopin’s 1899 novel The Awakening presents the complete, unabridged, and annotated text to its readers. The introduction to the volume places the text in the various contexts of its production, reception, and circulation. It also underlines the near-perfect marriage of formal and thematic concerns that Chopin achieves in her work. A chronology of the life and works of Chopin, background readings, critical essays, and bibliography follow the introduction to the volume. The background readings are constituted by short pieces by Wilbur Fisk Tillett and Dorothy Dix that are contemporaneous explorations of questions that are important and frequently addressed within the pages of The Awakening. The critical essays, in a similar vein, explore issues relating to Darwinism, race, and gender as they have been configured in the narrative of Chopin’s novel. The bibliography at the end of the volume will be useful for readers who are interested to further explore the works of Chopin in general and The Awakening in particular.
